TE RAEKAIHAU POINT is under threat from the development of the Aquarium of New Zealand.
Unlike much of Wellington's south coast, Te Raekaihau Point is largely unspoiled. It provides panoramic views that sweep across from Lyall Bay to Baring Head and across Cook Strait towards the Kaikouras and the South Island. Of the series of three headlands that dominate this part of the coastline, Te Raekaihau Point occupies a key position in relation to the sea and adjoining coastal escarpments.
Constructing the Aquarium of New Zealand at this site will totally dominate this rocky promontory. The multi storey building with flanking car parks and fenced off artificial rock pools, will irreversibly destroy the natural character of this stretch of the coast. Parts of the reef will need to be excavated to below sea level.
The proposed development will also severely restrict public access to an area that is popular with Wellingtonians for a wide range of recreational activities.
Save The Point is a group of people dedicated to saving the natural beauty of Te Raekaihau Point for everyone to enjoy in perpetuity.
